Tips for Keeping Your bedding looking Brand New!
Do you want your silk bedding to last longer and look as fresh as a fine wine that never ages? Well, we’ve got some tips to help keep that newness locked in for a long time!
1. Wash Regularly
Let’s start with the obvious: the washing process! This is where care begins, and if you want your bedding to stay shiny and new, it has to remain clean.
The frequency of washing can significantly impact the appearance of silk; neglecting it can lead to a dull look due to product buildup and other factors. Wash your silk pillow cases every 3 to 7 days, depending on your skin type and sensitivity.
You can choose to hand wash or machine wash, but hand washing is preferable as there’s no contact with heat and it also helps minimise wrinkles. When hand washing, use a mild detergent specifically formulated for silk. Regular detergents can be harsh and alter the pH balance of the fibres, damaging them in the process.
To hand wash, simply soak in a bowl of cold water mixed with your mild detergent. Remember, cold water is key! Hot water can harm silk by applying unwanted heat. Let it soak for a few minutes, gently rocking the bowl from side to side. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing aggressively; silk doesn’t need that!
Be sure to pretreat any stains if you don’t plan to wash immediately. This will help.
2. Air-drying is better
Air drying is the best method. Using a tumble dryer can stretch the fibres, weaken them, and leave pillowcases full of wrinkles.
Now, air drying has a few dos and don’ts:
Dos:
● Lay Flat: Place your bedding flat in a clean, well-ventilated area. This helps maintain its shape and prevents creasing.
● Hang Carefully: If you prefer to hang it, use a padded hanger or drape it over a drying rack to avoid wrinkles and creases.
Don’ts:
● Avoid Line Drying: Never dry your on a line that could leave dents or marks.
● No Direct Sunlight: Don’t dry them in direct sunlight, as the harsh rays can damage the fibres and lead to fading.
3. Rotate Your Silk Pillowcase
Rotating your luxury bedding helps it stay new and last much longer. Why? Because each set gets a break! If you only have one, it endures more wear and tear from daily use, causing it to age faster than if it had the support of one or two others.
So, it’s time to replace that pillowcase! We’re here to help! Check out our collection for a variety of colours and patterns that will perfectly suit your preferences.
4. Store in a Cool and Dry Place
Keep your bedding in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, but ensure the area is also well-ventilated. Store it in breathable cotton or linen bags to keep them fresh and protect them from mould, dust, and other contaminants.
If possible, fold them flat while storing them to prevent wrinkles and creases. And remember, never store a dirty pillowcase!
5. Protect from Oils and Products
Nighttime skin and hair care products can often find their way into the fibres. These products contain oils and certain chemicals that can stain and lead to gradual yellowing—not a good look.
To protect them, consider wrapping your hair in a silk bonnet or scarf, and allow your facial products to absorb completely before resting your head on the pillow. Sticking to this routine will help keep it looking brand new for longer.
6. Steer Clear from Heat!
If dealing with the wrinkles that come after drying bothers you and you want to iron them out, that’s understandable—but it’s no good for your pillowcase!
Silk items are made from natural protein fibres, and heat can alter their structure, ruining the fabric over time. If you air-dry properly, you’ll experience far less wrinkling.
However, if you must iron, use the lowest heat setting and place a clean towel between the iron and the fabric.
Alternatively, consider using a steamer. It provides a gentle heat that relaxes the pillowcase without damaging it, and the steam adds moisture without the harshness of dry heat from an iron.
